Water-based and silicone-based lubricants differ in texture, how long they stay slippery and which toys they can be used with. Choose by the intended use and the labels on your actual products.
Water-based lube
Water-based formulas are often compatible with a wide range of toys and barriers. They can dry during use and need reapplying. Thickness and ingredients vary, so two water-based products may feel different.
Check the condom label and the toy's directions. 'Water-based' is useful information, but it does not replace the compatibility instructions or tell you whether a formula will suit sensitive skin.
Silicone-based lube
Silicone-based formulas generally stay slippery longer. Some manufacturers advise against using them with particular toys, including some silicone designs. Follow the toy maker's advice rather than treating every silicone toy as interchangeable.
Check barrier compatibility too. Cleaning may take more effort than with a water-based formula; follow the product's directions.
What about oil-based lube?
Oil-based lubricants can damage latex condoms and may be unsuitable for other barrier materials or toys. Read the relevant labels together. A lubricant specifically designed for intimate use is different from an ordinary body oil or lotion.
Choosing for comfort
Fragrance, warming effects and other added features may be unhelpful if you are prone to irritation. A natural or organic label does not guarantee comfort. Avoid known allergens and stop using a formula that stings or burns.
Lube reduces friction; it does not make painful or unwanted activity something to continue. Persistent soreness, unusual discharge or recurring irritation needs medical advice. Ongoing vaginal dryness may call for a moisturiser intended for vaginal use or another treatment, rather than a different lubricant alone.
